I wouldn't get my hopes up, but it'd be great if the creators could accentuate some of their themes with meaningful mlm rep. There's SO much potential, though, particularly in Bakugo and Kirishima's characters in terms of mlm rep. There's not a lot there, and what is present, I didn't find particularly flattering. Again, another negative trope harming LGBTQ+ people.Īnd idk what the deal is with Mineta, but we don't want him. It wasn't explicitly stated, but I got major psycho gay vibes from him, given his voice, appearance, and hyper-fixation on Endeavor. There's also another one-off villain in the show who had an obsession with Endeavor and committed violent acts to get his attention. I want to acknowledge that I don't identify as trans, so I'm hardly an authority on trans rep, but I saw a lot of Magne's appearances as negative tropes about trans people.
Idk if Tiger is confirmed trans or if that's just speculation, but I also found it distasteful that he and Magne fought very early on in their series lifespans and he even misgendered her during the battle. She was also misgendered consistently by people outside of the league of villains, and it kinda sucks that their only apparent trans character was framed as a mentally ill social deviant. She was killed in the middle of her "coming out" scene in one of the most gruesome deaths the show's had, and it was also one of the first on-screen deaths (if not the first) of a named character. I really enjoy the show (I only watch the dub, so I'm technically behind), but definitely not for its progressive LGBTQ+ rep. The show has a lot to say on masculine tropes and positive masculinity, but unfortunately that hasn't translated into any meaningful gay rep. I think the one exception might be Toga who mentions she uses her quirks on people she loves (which has been both men and women), but it's not clear she meant this romantically. I'm not aware of any of the main characters being LGBTQ in very concrete terms yet.
My understanding is the Bakugou and Deku relationship has been getting more traction amongst the community as of late due to some interactions in issues, but the specifics of why is a bit beyond my knowledge. I think the show leans into Bakugou and Kirishima a little bit but it's usually open to interpretation (such as seemingly sharing a bed in a room during one of the movies). I think most people view Bakugou as the likely gay / bi candidate, due to a combination of his seemingly disinterest in girls and his fairly classical tsundere attitude. The fandom for m/m content with this series is very prolific, involving a lot of the main characters of the show. My understanding is that the English version used the word "love" to describe a "deep respect" but don't quote me. The bi character I think you're referencing is Mineta, although from what I've heard that it might have been a translation error.
I don't really follow the manga outside of when something trends on Twitter, so take this with a grain of salt.
